Topic: The role of parents in the management of Neuropsychiatric Disorders in Children - Research Gaps and Experiences from a LMIC Setting
One-third of the world’s population are children and adolescents, with the majority living in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Neuropsychiatric disorders affect 10 - 20% of this age group. Childhood neuropsychiatric disorders increase the risk for poor physical health, social relationship problems, reduced psychological well-being, high risk-taking behaviours, financial difficulties, and educational underachievement, as well as negative impacts on the family, society, and global economy.
Early Detection and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders in children are important for prospective prevention of other disorders, symptom reduction, and overall improved health outcomes. Care for children with neuropsychiatric disorders is frequently unequally distributed across the poor- and -rich resource countries. As Children and adolescents rarely initiate help-seeking and decision-making in the management of neuropsychiatric disorders, they majorly rely on the primary caregivers, mostly parents, for early detection, access to care, and appropriate treatment options. Despite the importance of this topic, research and documentation on the role of parents in the management of childhood neuropsychiatric disorders in LMIC are limited.
This webinar aimed to examine the role of parents in the management of neuropsychiatric disorders in children from LMIC, highlight research gaps, share data and experiences on the topic using a prototype LMIC setting, and enumerate the implications for clinical practice, research, and the future mental health of the most populous world’s children and their parents.
